This short guide to reverse engineering (“Reverse Engineering 1. Example uses of the basic but essential tools are given. A brief guide to the i. Download latest Cydia Impactor 11 to unjailbreak and download latest Yalu 10.3.3 Jailbreak. ![]() Run it without arguments to set it up, then a command might be “Clutch Aerogram” (find mobile apps that are included in Bug Bounties, such as those on Hacker. One and Bug. Crowd)Transfer the new IPA package in /User/Documents/Cracked/ to a development machine. Rename the IPA package to have the file extension . Run unzip on the package, which produces usually three files and the directory /Payload/Appname. Run tools like otool (examples below) to check if the binary still looks good and gather information about it. Use class- dump- z. Steps 9 and 1. 0 are good, but not strictly necessary to start with. Linux as well as Mac (see Github)Start with simple tools like strings. Use the Hopper Disassembler (example use below), buy a personal licence if you can, otherwise it will quit after 3. Use Charles to MITM app traffic (example configuration and use below); again buy a licence if you can, otherwise it stops after 3. See the reference to i. OS Reverse Engineering at the end of this article for more. Check back here at WHITEHACK for more coming examples using Hopper Disassembler to analyse apps, change them, and write out new apps, and other somewhat more advanced material. Also check back here at WHITEHACK for a decent guide to hacking and securing i. OS apps; useful if you’re an i. OS developer as well as a general hacker/programmer. Start with strings. You don’t need expensive, sophisticated tools to reverse engineer i. OS apps. If you have a machine running Linux or Windows, but not a Mac, that will do, along with a decent UNIX- like environment (in the case of Windows, e. Cygwin). It’s also not necessary to have a Mac for Hopper Disassembler (available for Linux but not Windows) or Charles Proxy (available for Linux and Windows as well as Mac OS X). You should know how to share your Internet connection to “middle” traffic between an app and the Internet. The strings program perhaps unsurprisingly dumps strings. You can pipe the output to grep or your own script to run regular expression matching on the output. Strings is simple but an essential tool for finding readable text in binaries. Most of the time in binaries, even if they are stripped of symbols, there are sections within segments that give up class and function names, error messages and global static strings used for various purposes, debugging information (so long as it’s text), and much more. It’s well worth piping the output to, say, a Perl script to run a collection of regular expressions against the output. In mobile apps, you might find a lot of XML, URLs, certain file and repository information (where an i. OS app checks for a jailbreak), SQL (for local sqlite storage or to send to a back- end), base. It’s definitely worthwhile thinking about what you might like to find, creating that script with some patterns you’re interested in, and seeing what pops out. Since Apple’s Fair. Play DRM gets in our way, we want that gone to begin with, so the app will have to be “cracked” with a tool like Clutch. So Clutch the app, and if all goes well, you should have something like/User/Documents/Cracked/appname- version- (Clutch- 1. Pad or i. Phone ready for transfer to a machine for analysis. Assuming you’re familiar with the jailbreak process and transfer of files back and forth, something like this works to find it, if you’re not exactly sure (Clutch should tell you): $ ssh [email protected]$ password < ENTER> # cd /User/Documents/Cracked# ls# …# logout. A quick way to transfer a cracked app: $ mkdir crackedapps$ cd crackedapps$ ssh [email protected] ‘cat /User/Documents/Cracked/appname- version- \(Clutch- 1. And you now have the cracked app appname. The ipa files are just zip files, so rename and unzip (it’s best to do this in their own directories): $ mkdir appname$ mv appname. You will now see some files and a directory which is always called Payload. Inside the Payload directory is a directory named for the app with “. Payload$ lsappname. If Clutch fails and you have output similar to “Can’t crack 6. This app contains Framework, crack failed” you might not be out of luck entirely. Try checking out the directory /tmp/clutch_ABCDWXYZ/Appname. ABCDWXYZ is the recently created Clutch output directory and Appname. Clutch may have successfully written a cracked 3. Hopper, or place back in it’s proper app bundle directory to run on your i. Pad or i. Phone. Now you have the the resources and files that come with the app, as well as the app binary itself. It’s time to run strings, which is as easy as: $ strings appname. You may want to extend the number of characters output by default (which is 4) with the - n switch, and pipe it through less.$ strings - n 8 appname | less. Some versions of strings assume you want armv. Mac; you should not have that problem on Linux or Windows. Before writing a Perl script with some regular expressions, which will accept output from strings through a pipe, there are always a few interesting and simple snippets of text you may like to try with grep first. For instance: $ strings appname | grep “< ? SELECT” (or select, insert, update… etc)$ strings appname | grep “http”$ strings appname | grep “cydia” (and others, to check for jailbreak tests)$ strings appname | grep “. Crypt” (this will also show AESCrypt, for example)and “man grep” for an overview of grep’s pattern matching. The screenshot below (excuse the sloppy job of brushing out some information) shows the curious string “My. Password. 12. 34” as the first line of output, which can be searched for in Hopper later to figure out what it might be used for. MITM with Charles Proxy and/or Burp. Suite. There are a few ways to capture traffic and use an intermediate CA to “middle” SSL/TLS traffic, but by far the easiest way is to use a tool like Portswigger’s Burp. Suite or Charles Proxy. Before starting the app on an i. Pad or i. Phone, have a Mac. Book handy to share an internet connection. What I’ve found works very well is to open the sharing settings on the Mac. Book and set it to share its Internet connection over ethernet with other devices connecting through Wifi. You may need to go to System Preferences, Network, and under Wi. Fi, select Create New Network for Network Name. There, you can set the security and password, as shown below. Hit “Create” then “Apply” and you should be ready to connect and share the connection. If you have problems, you may need to adjust your firewall and/or restart the Mac. Install Charles Proxy or Burp. Suite or your favourite proxy, then configure the i. Pad or i. Phone. You will have to configure the i. Pad or i. Phone to use the new shared Internet connection. If you’ve named the shared Internet connection, e. Device might be using, select the new shared connection on your i. Device and enter the WEP or WPA2 key for the connection (if any). Run “ifconfig” on the Mac. Book to find the IP address of the wireless adapter, this should be the same as the default gateway/router. Under HTTP Proxy settings on the i. Device, select manual, and enter the IP address and port number the proxy will listen on. The default port numbers are 8. Burp. Suite and 8. Charles Proxy. Below is an example configuration on an i. Pad. Now install the proxy’s CA certificate with Safari. You can also email it to yourself if you use email on the i. Device, open and install the CA certificate. For Burp. Suite, fetch http: //burp and click the link for the CA certificate; for Charles Proxy, fetch http: //charlesproxy. There’s one last step, and that is the “scope” of what you would like to capture with the proxy. This is straight forward with both Burp. Suite and Charles Proxy, see the documentation for each proxy for more details on including addresses in scope and excluding others as you may want.

One of the strengths of the Run command is its ability to do almost everything the command line can do. You should note, however, that if you're running a program that outputs something and exits, that the output will only show up for a few seconds and then disappear. Take the ipconfig command for example. If you were to type that into Run, it would open a command prompt, run the ipconfig command, and then close because the command finished running! To fix this, type cmd into the Run dialog, and then type ipconfig into the command prompt. 3GP PLAYER 2013. 3GP Player 2013 is a free 3GP video player for your PC. I wrote the bestselling book The Myths of Innovation to share the truths everyone should know about how big ideas really change the world. Far too much of what we know about creativity isn’t based on facts at all, and my mission is to change this. Since its publication I’ve seen bloggerssummarizethebookintosimple lists (or cheezy videos), but here’s a version written by my own hand. You can also see my compilation of 1. The book was heavily researched with 1. The myth of epiphany. Flashes of insight dominate how creativity is reported, despite how small a role they play in breakthroughs. Epiphanies are a consequence of effort, not just the inspiration for it. And no idea is completely original, as all ideas are made from other ideas. When you hear a story about a flash of insight, the useful questions to ask are 1) how much time the creator spent working before the flash happened, 2) How many ideas from other people they reused and 3) how much work they did after the flash to make the idea successful. The Epiphany Therapy trope as used in popular culture. Writers sometimes try to add depth to their characters by giving them some sort of psychological. Done something wrong? We all have. An epiphany doesn’t find investors, make prototypes, sacrifice free time or persist in the face of rejection: only you can do that and you’ll have to do it without a guarantee of success (More about epiphany myths). The myth that we know history. We romanticize the past to fit the present, creating traps for creatives who don’t know the true history of their own field. Inspiring lies are often more popular than complex truths. And history is heavily tainted by survivorship bias. History is not a straight line of progress, which means the present isn’t either. Innovation is OLD and the tactics for trying to change the present are ancient. Why did America succeed when 9. Was there anything really special about the Rosetta Stone? Dominant ideas aren’t necessarily good ones. Find the biggest idea in your field and dig in: you’ll be surprised at what you find beneath the surface that helps your work in the present (see Myth #8: the best idea wins). The myth of a method. The challenge with creative work, especially in a marketplace, is the many factors beyond your control. You can do everything right and still fail. Most books on creativity make big promises based on history: they cherry pick examples from the past to support their “method”. Methods can be useful but they deny that the present is different from the past. There are too many variables in the present to have certainty. This is why terms like innovation system or innovation pipeline are absurd. The idea of an innovation portfolio, where a range of risk is assumed across multiple ideas, is more honest. Many books on creativity are surprisingly uncreative (lightbulbs should be banned from creativity book covers) and make impossible promises. The myth we love new ideas. We are a conservative species: try something as simple as standing, rather than sitting, in your next group meeting. How accepting were your peers? Conformity is deep in our biology. While talking about creativity is very popular, actually being creative puts your social status at risk. All great ideas were rejected, often for years or decades, yet we bury this in our history (see Myth #1 & #2). The history of breakthroughs is a tale of persistence against rejection. Much of what makes a successful innovator is their ability to persuade and convince conservative people of the merits of their ideas, a very different skill from creativity itself. Your problem is likely not your ideas, but your skills for pitching ideas to others. Ideas are rarely rejected on their merits; they’re rejected because of how they make people feel. The bigger the idea, the harder the persuasion challenge. The myth of the lone inventor. It’s easier to worship a hero if they are portrayed as superhuman. But even people worthy of the title genius or prodigy like Mozart, Picasso and Einstein had family and teachers who taught them. Many of Edison’s patents are shared with co- workers, as despite his huge ego he knew collaboration was critical (His Menlo Park office was one of the first research labs). Stories of mad geniuses who worked completely alone are rare. Pick any master who you think worked alone and read some of their history: you’ll be surprised how many people influenced their work. Learning to collaborate, and give and receive feedback, may matter more than your brilliance. The myth that good ideas are rare. If you watch any 6 year old child they will invent dozens of things in an hour. We are built for creativity. The problem is the conventions of adult life demand conformity and we sacrifice our creative instincts in favor of social status. Unlike a child, adults are supremely and instantly judgmental, killing ideas before they’ve had even a moment to prove their worth. It’s easy to rediscover creativity, which is why brainstorming rarely helps much. We’re already creative. The challenge is ideas don’t come with the courage to invest in them. Good ideas are everywhere: what’s uncommon is people with the conviction to put their reputation behind ideas. The myth your boss knows more than you. A fallacy of workplaces is that senior staff are better at everything than the people who work for them. This is false in many ways, but creative intuition might be the most false. To rise in power demands good political judgement, yet innovation requires a willingness to defy convention. Convention- defiers are harder to promote in most organizations, yet essential for progress. To assume senior staff are the best at leading change is a mistake. The myth the best idea wins. We lionize winners and history blames losers for their fate, even if they did most of the same things the winners did (See survivorship bias). Marketing, politics and timing have tremendous influence on why one idea or its competitors wins, yet these details are more complex than we want to hear and fade from history. It’s satisfying to believe the best idea has won in the past, because it’s something we want to believe about the present too. But to be successful with ideas demands studying why some lousy ideas have triumphed (Why doesn’t the U. S. use the metric system?), and some great ones are still on the sidelines. The world of ideas is not a pure meritocracy and you need to act accordingly (See related chapter excerpt). The myth that problems are less interesting than solutions. Einstein said “If I had 2. I would take 1. 9 to define it.” There are many creative ways to think about a problem, and different ways to look at a situation. The impatient run at full speed into solving things, speeding right past the insights needed to find a great solution. If you listen to how successful creators talk about their daily work, they spend more time thinking about the problem than the epiphany obsessed media would have us believe. The myth that innovation is always good. How would you feel about an invention that ends your profession? What impact will an idea have 1,5,1. All innovation is change and all change helps some people and hurts others. Many horrible inventions were created with the best intentions (and some horrible intentions led to some good consequences). Benz and Ford never imagined automobiles would kill 4. U. S. And the Wright brothers never imagined Predator drones. Any successful idea has a multitude of consequences that are impossible to predict and difficult to even measure. Editor’s note: This is a guest post from Logan Marshall of The Free Life Project. The deafening roar of the crowd grew steadily louder as I erupted from the woods in third place, two runners fast on my heels. My heart pounded in my ears as I tore up the hill, my legs heavy from exertion. Rounding the crest, my coach shouted above the roar, “4. GO NOW!”As the pace started to increase for one final sprint to the finish, old mental patterns set in. I began to fade, giving my competitors a five meter lead. The colorful flags of the finish line waved in the distance as I gritted my teeth against the pain. Then something amazing happened. Why are you holding back? I asked myself. What is stopping you from beating those guys? In an act of unrestrained effort I hurtled past my competitors and sprinted for the finish line. Running on the edge of collapse, giving every last drop of energy I had, I blasted through the shoot and crumpled to the ground in a muddy trembling heap. Laying in the damp grass, my chest rising and falling erratically in an effort to catch my breath, sweat soaking through my jersey, I smiled…for I knew there was nothing more I could have done. When I think of the happiest moments in my life, the moments I am most proud of, that high school cross country meet immediately surfaces. Not because it was my fastest race, not because I won, but because I didn’t hold anything back. The Decision to Live All Out. I’ve always been driven. In high school, I would wake up at 5: 3. However, come graduation and the culmination my competitive running career, this unstoppable motivation seemed to fade. While I spent countless hours “working” on my online businesses, my efforts were weak and unfocused. I logged countless hours at my computer, but what did I have to show for it? I told myself I wanted to succeed, but my actions didn’t reflect this belief. Then one day I had an epiphany. Walking across campus after another painfully ineffective work day, my head spun with frustration and thoughts of self pity. I had slipped into the fog of defeat I’d been lost in for weeks, cursing myself for my lack of self discipline. Suddenly I stopped. In an eerie flashback, the same questions that surfaced at the end of my championship race materialized on the screen on my mind: Why are you holding back? What is stopping you from living the life you’ve imagined for yourself? What’s the worst thing that could happen if you decided to wholeheartedly commit yourself to achieving your goals?”Standing in the middle of the quad, I felt that the fog had lifted and leaving in its place was an intense clarity. I suddenly realized that the pain of halfheartedness was far greater than my fear of failure. In that moment, I made the incredibly liberating decision to release the breaks I had been unconsciously pressing for months and commit to pure unshackled effort. I decided to go for it. Are You Interested Or Committed? When it comes to getting paid to do what you love, are you interested or committed? Too many people stroll passively through life, intrigued by a whole slew of possibilities but not committed to making any of them a reality. What’s the difference between interest and commitment? Interest reads a blog post; commitment applies that post day after day. Interest works an hour a day on your business; commitment works whenever time permits. Interest procrastinates; commitment focuses on what’s important. Interest makes excuses; commitment constantly acquires new skills and solutions. If you’re struggling with this issue, ask yourself the same questions I asked myself: Why are you holding back? What is stopping you from living the life you’ve imagined for yourself? If you want it bad enough, if you’re committed, you’ll find a way to make it happen. If the thought of slaving away in a cubicle for the rest of your life is a powerful enough motivator for you to work your ass of in order to escape it, I invite you to join me… and go for it. You Know Enough. The biggest complaint I hear is this: “I would take action and get started, but I just don’t know enough yet. I’m just not ready yet.”To this I have two responses: There is always more to learn. The amount of information on the internet is equivalent to a stack of books stretching from Earth to Pluto 1. If you keep waiting until you finish that book, podcast or video course, if you keep waiting until you are ready, you will never be ready. You learn far more from experience than consumption. I learned more during my first product launch (1 week) than I did during the prior 6 months of ravenous information consumption. Concepts are introduced via information; skills are honed through action. Now, I’m not saying you should blindly act for the sake of action, not at all. In fact, if you want to be successful, learning MUST be a continual process. After all, it’s hard to create value if you don’t know what you’re talking about. The key is to distinguish between the kind of compulsive, ineffective learning that so many new marketers struggle with and learning for the sole purpose of taking action. So don’t wait to get started. Start now and correct your course as you go along. You know enough. How To Go All Out: 4 Steps to Unshackled Commitment. Are you ready to go all out? Are you ready to throw off the bowlines and fully commit yourself to achieving a life of freedom and adventure? If so, here’s how. Get Your Mindset Right. Success in any aspect of life starts with your mindset. Faulty beliefs and assumptions are like powerful headwinds halting your progress and blowing you off course. In order to truly “go all out” and make unprecedented progress, you must make the decision at a core level to hold nothing back. You must take a good look at your life and decide that nothing is going to stand in your way of success. Back in high school I made the decision that no one was going to beat me to the finish line. I made a commitment at a fundamental level that I was going to do anything it took to achieve my goal. This kind of raw, unrestrained dedication is extremely powerful. Trust me. Refine your goals. It’s hard to commit yourself to something if your finish line is just a nebulous point off in the distance. So before you do anything, get ruthlessly clear about what your ultimate outcome looks like. Nail down exactly what you want, how you are going to get there and on what sort of timeline you plan to reach your destination. For me, I want to have the freedom to pay my way through college, go to Alaska next summer and help build a school for 1. India. This is what motivates me to continuously give my all. Your goals will undoubtedly be different, and that’s fine. The key is to sculpt a vision that is so freaking awesome you are willing to do anything to achieve it. Focus on what’s important. While the right mindset will give you the motivation you need to bring your A Game, if you focus on unimportant activities you still aren’t going to get anywhere!“Going for it” doesn’t mean quadrupling your work load. Work for the sake of work is not the goal. The goal is to live and work on your own terms. This is especially significant if you already have a busy life full of responsibilities. In order to achieve freedom and escape the trap of selling your time for money, you must be ruthlessly selective about what you work on and what you ignore. What should you work on? It all depends upon what stage you are on right now. But if I could work on just one aspect of my business, creating invaluable content would be it. No question. Hands down. In fact, I’ve restructured my days so that creating value is the vast majority of what I do. Inspired by Pareto’s 8. I now spend 7. 0- 8. Hold yourself accountable. Unfortunately, personal drive usually isn’t enough. It may be enough to get you started, but after a week or two the “new years resolution effect” begins to set in and your initial enthusiasm slowly begins to fade. In order to stay committed, you need a way of holding yourself accountable. How? Here are my top three ways: Use the Weekly Daily Goals system to keep track of your most important tasks. At the beginning of each week, write down your top goals for the next 7 days. Before you go to bed each night, write down 2- 3 key tasks that, if accomplished, will leave you satisfied with your day. Once you complete your goals for the day, stop guilt free. Tell others what you are doing. ![]() FIFA 1. 7 CPY Crack for PC Free Download. Powered by Frostbite technology. The New Confessions of an Economic Hit Man by John Perkins. INTRODUCTIONThe New Confessions. I'm haunted every day by what I did as an economic hit man (EHM). I'm haunted by the lies I told back then about the World Bank. I'm haunted by the ways in which that bank, its sister organizations, and I empowered US corporations to spread their cancerous tentacles across the planet. I'm haunted by the payoffs to the leaders of poor countries, the blackmail, and the threats that if they resisted, if they refused to accept loans that would enslave their countries in debt, the CIA's jackals would overthrow or assassinate them. I wake up sometimes to the horrifying images of heads of state, friends of mine, who died violent deaths because they refused to betray their people. Like Shakespeare's Lady Macbeth, I try to scrub the blood from my hands. The Day of the Jackal (1971) is a thriller novel by English writer Frederick Forsyth about a professional assassin who is contracted by the OAS, a French dissident. The Day of the Jackal is a 1973 Anglo-French political thriller film directed by Fred Zinnemann and starring Edward Fox and Michel Lonsdale. Based on the 1971 novel. Penguin Readers are a carefully graded collection of Readers that enable English language learners to enjoy reading whatever their language level. Tabtight professional, free when you need it, VPN service. But the blood is merely a symptom. The treacherous cancer beneath the surface, which was revealed in the original Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, has metasta- sized. It has spread from the economically developing countries to the United States and the rest of the world; it attacks the very foundations of democracy and the planet's life- support systems. All the EHM and jackal tools — false economics, false promises, threats, bribes, extortion, debt, deception, coups, assassinations, unbridled military power — are used around the world today, even more than during the era I exposed more than a decade ago. Although this cancer has spread widely and deeply, most people still aren't aware of it; yet all of us are impacted by the collapse it has caused. It has become the dominant system of economics, government, and society today. ![]() ![]() Fear and debt drive this system. We are hammered with messages that terrify us into believing that we must pay any price, assume any debt, to stop the enemies who, we are told, lurk at our doorsteps. The problem comes from somewhere else. Insurgents. Terrorists. Them.” And its solution requires spending massive amounts of money on goods and services produced by what I call the corporatocracy — vast networks of corporations, banks, colluding governments, and the rich and powerful people tied to them. We go deeply into debt; our country and its financial henchmen at the World Bank and its sister institutions coerce other countries to go deeply into debt; debt enslaves us and it enslaves those countries. These strategies have created a “death economy” — one based on wars or the threat of war, debt, and the rape of the earth's resources. It is an unsustainable economy that depletes at ever- increasing rates the very resources upon which it depends and at the same time poisons the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the foods we eat. Although the death economy is built on a form of capitalism, it is important to note that the word capitalism refers to an economic and political system in which trade and industry are controlled by private owners rather than the state. ![]() It includes local farmers' markets as well as this very dangerous form of global corporate capitalism, controlled by the corporatocracy, which is predatory by nature, has created a death economy, and ultimately is self- destructive. I decided to write The New Confessions of an Economic Hit Man because things have changed so much during this past decade. The cancer has spread throughout the United States as well as the rest of the world. The rich have gotten richer and everyone else has gotten poorer in real terms. A powerful propaganda machine owned or controlled by the corporatocracy has spun its stories to convince us to accept a dogma that serves its interests, not ours. These stories contrive to convince us that we must embrace a system based on fear and debt, accumulating stuff, and dividing and conquering everyone who isn't “us.” The stories have sold us the lie that the EHM system will provide security and make us happy. Some would blame our current problems on an organized global conspiracy. I wish it were so simple. Although, as I point out later, there are hundreds of conspiracies — not just one grand conspiracy — that affect all of us, this EHM system is fueled by something far more dangerous than a global conspiracy. It is driven by concepts that have become accepted as gospel. We believe that all economic growth benefits humankind and that the greater the growth, the more widespread the benefits. Similarly, we believe that those people who excel at stoking the fires of economic growth should be exalted and rewarded, while those born at the fringes are available for exploitation. And we believe that any means — including those used by today's EHMs and jackals — are justified to promote economic growth; preserve our comfortable, affluent Western way of life; and wage war against anyone (such as Islamic terrorists) who might threaten our economic well- being, comfort, and security. In response to readers' requests, I have added many new details and accounts of how we did our work during my time as an EHM, and I have clarified some points in the previously published chapters. More importantly, I have added an entirely new part 5, which explains how the EHM game is played today — who today's economic hit men are, who today's jackals are, and how their deceptions and tools are more far- reaching and enslaving now than ever. Also in response to readers' requests, part 5 includes new chapters that reveal what it will take to overthrow the EHM system, and specific tactics for doing so. The book ends with a section titled “Documentation of EHM Activity, 2. Despite all the bad news and the attempts of modern- day robber barons to steal our democracy and our planet, I am filled with hope. I know that when enough of us perceive the true workings of this EHM system, we will take the individual and collective actions necessary to control the cancer and restore our health. The New Confessions of an Economic Hit Man reveals how the system works today and what you and I — all of us — can do to change it. Tom Paine inspired American revolutionaries when he wrote, “If there must be trouble, let it be in my day, that my child may have peace.” Those words are as important today as they were in 1. My goal in this new book is nothing less than Paine's: to inspire and empower us all to do whatever it takes to lead the way to peace for our children. CHAPTER 1. Dirty Business. When I graduated from business school in 1. I was determined not to participate in the Vietnam War. I had recently married Ann. She too opposed the war and was adventurous enough to agree to join the Peace Corps with me. We first arrived in Quito, Ecuador, in 1. I was a twenty- three- year- old volunteer assigned to develop credit and savings cooperatives in communities deep in the Amazon rain forest. Ann's job was to teach hygiene and child care to indigenous women. Ann had been to Europe, but it was my first trip away from North America. I knew we'd fly into Quito, one of the highest capitals in the world — and one of the poorest. I expected it to be different from anything I'd ever seen, but I was totally unprepared for the reality. As our plane from Miami descended toward the airport, I was shocked by the hovels along the runway. I leaned across Ann in the middle seat and, pointing through my window, asked the Ecuadorian businessman in the aisle seat next to her, “Do people actually live there?”“We are a poor country,” he replied, nodding solemnly. The scenes that greeted us on the bus ride into town were even worse — tattered beggars hobbling on homemade crutches along garbage- infested streets, children with horribly distended bellies, skeletal dogs, and shantytowns of cardboard boxes that passed as homes. The bus delivered us to Quito's five- star hotel, the Inter. Continental. It was an island of luxury in that sea of poverty, and the place where I and about thirty other Peace Corps volunteers would attend several days of in- country briefings. During the first of many lectures, we were informed that Ecuador was a combination of feudal Europe and the American Wild West. Our teachers prepped us about all the dangers: venomous snakes, malaria, anacondas, killer parasites, and hostile head- hunting warriors. Then the good news: Texaco had discovered vast oil deposits, not far from where we'd be stationed in the rain forest. We were assured that oil would transform Ecuador from one of the poorest countries in the hemisphere to one of the richest. |
